KLINGON MARK #1 - 1984

KLINGON MARK #1 - 1984

My very first Klingon costume!

Circa 1984 (around the time when Star Trek 3 premiered, I went with a buncha fans from the Austrek Star Trek club) and later upgraded slightly for Aussiecon II, the World Science Fiction Convention held in Melbourne.

Strewth, this were a loooong time ago!

Let's see, I started with my trusty mail as a kind of undershirt. The vest and yoke were made from recycled heavy canvas, originally green, which I painted metallic copper. Yes, I knew that the colour of the on-screen uniforms was pewter, but I was, and am, always one for making my own personal changes to costumes.

The trim was a mixture of aluminium flat stock and textured sheeting cut to shape and riveted on. The black stripes was plastic wire...I seem to remember it was old television antenna cable! Actually, there's a lot of recycled bits and pieces in this costume.

The faux fur sleeves were salvaged from a second-hand coat.

The belt buckle was sculpted in clay then cast in fibreglass. I was quite proud of it at the time!

Still remember how tight that bloody costume was! Especially the radiator hose or somesuch I used to cinch the vest in with.

The knuckle spikes were rope bights painted copper, and the vambraces for the forearms were made from leather and scrap anodised aluminium. The thigh guards were prototype Society For Creative Anachronism pieces that I was working on at the time and were made from scrap galvanised iron, painted black.

The cloak was a Roman style one I made for another costume.

The disruptor pistol was made from steel and wood and is based on the ones briefly glimpsed in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It's all recycled materials and found objects.

At this stage I didn't attempt the prosthetic forehead appliance, and didn't even bother with a beard first time I wore the costume. Well, okay, still works as a Classic Television series Klingon, kind of. Especially now that they've muddied the genetic waters with the recent Enterprise episodes that explain why there are smooth and lumpy headed Klingons!

When I did make a beard it was the thickest crepe wool you could get, and it itched like crazy! I wasn't real good at blending it or gluing it on either back then. Would have been okay if I could have riveted it!

"I hope pain is something you enjoy", to quote Commander Kruge.

Still think it looked like a road kill possum.

I'm not sure who took this photo, possibly my partner Gail, but definitely a member of the local Star Trek club. Much appreciated, because I don't have many pictures of this gear, and just about none of the pieces still exist, except for the mail and the thigh guards, which you can't beat to death with a stick anyway.

I've just noticed the sign for The Last Starfighter...it was Coming Soon To A Cinema Near You back then. :)
